Susan Lyne’s Measure of Managerial Talent

Media vet shares a valuable workplace tip

SusanLyneLinkedInCurrently the president of AOL’s BBG Ventures (Built By Girls), Susan Lyne (pictured) has the benefit of a wide variety of media experience. Everything from managing editor of The Village Voice to founding EIC of Premiere magazine to president and CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

Lyne has also held a number of positions with Gilt Groupe. When Fast Company articles editor Jeff Chu asked Lyne one of his questions, that’s where she dipped back to for a fascinating answer:

How do you create a great team? Whom do you hire and promote?

At Gilt [which she ran from 2008 to 2010], I set up an informal measurement system: The people who could get their peers invested in their success were the people we should promote. If you can get people who don’t report to you to jump in and help you get something done, you are going to be a really good manager.

Wise words. Female startups funded by the BBG fund include Glamsquad, Gracious Eloise, Rocksbox and Sunshine. Read the rest of Chu’s Q&A here.
