Stop Watching Me Over My Shoulder!

Now that The Register Citizen in Torrington, Conn., has turned its building into an open newsroom, readers can wander in anytime, the NYT reports.

Torringtonians can use the free wifi and grab a cup of coffee, take a class on blogging, sit in on the news meeting or just wander around and watch reporters work.

The idea is “to let the public see The Register Citizen as its space,” the Times says, and if “the old ship was sinking…it makes sense to try a new one, however uncertain the voyage.”

Other newsrooms owned by the Register-Citizen parent company Journal Register Company, which owns 300 newspapers, will eventually be redesigned in the same way, assuming this experiment works.
