Sorry Diaspora, Facebook Is Too Big To Fail

The new startup Diaspora, which is being called the “Facebook replacement” by many in the press, is going to fail at displacing Facebook. While the company appeared to be a proper solution back in May when Facebook was taking heat for privacy issues, Diaspora still hasn’t even launched yet.

For those less aware of what the service provides, it’s essentially a self-hosted (BitTorrent-like) social network with much more effective privacy controls. The theory behind it sounds great, however Facebook is growing like crazy and it’s going to be pretty much impossible for any competitor to uproot them.

As the team at Backupify points out, who the hell wants to host their own social network? Is this really something that is in strong demand? While it sounds awesome in theory, it only appeals to the geekiest individuals out there.
