Twitter Wins Round One in Spammer Lawsuit Battle (AllThingsD) According to a document filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco on Tuesday, the microblogging service settled ongoing litigation with TweetAdder, one of five defendants named in a series of lawsuits filed by Twitter in 2012. As a result of the settlement, TweetAdder and its employees agree to knock off a whole bunch of practices that aren’t kosher with Twitter’s terms of service. CNET Under the terms of the settlement, the owners and employees of TweetAdder agree not to take part in "creating, developing, manufacturing, adapting, modifying, making available, trafficking in, using, disclosing, selling, licensing, distributing (with or without monetary charge), updating, providing costumer support for, or offering for use, sale, license, or distribution (with or without monetary charge), any software or technology designed for use in connection with Twitter's service." Basically, TweetAdder can no longer come near Twitter. And, if it does, it faces steep fines. SocialTimes TweetAdder released a new version of its software last week that eliminates a previous feature that allowed users to follow a set of users in bulk. As part of the agreement, the company must shut down all previous versions of the software. Computerworld Among its stipulations, the settlement bans the transmission of "unsolicited commercial messages" to Twitter users, "including but not limited to Tweets, @replies and direct messages." PCWorld The settlement also bans Skootle, creator of TweetAdder, from "engaging in false representations or false advertising that would misleadingly suggest to a reasonable consumer that a software or other technology conforms to Twitter's Terms of Service." Twitter hopes that by shutting down tool providers like Skootle and "going to the source," it can prevent other spammers from accessing its services. Rand Paul Visiting Facebook and Google on Fundraising Tour (Mashable) Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky will shake hands with top executives at Facebook, Google and eBay on a fundraising tour through Silicon Valley later this week. Paul will begin his trip Thursday at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., where he'll take a tour and meet with Facebook higher-ups (no word on whether Zuckerberg will attend). The Hill/Hillicon Valley Paul, who is widely believed to be mulling a White House bid, has been becoming more involved in technology issues recently. He blasted his colleagues for holding a hearing last week to examine Apple's methods for avoiding taxes and said the Senate should apologize to Apple for the "spectacle" of the hearing. Courier-Journal It’s a target-rich environment for a libertarian presidential hopeful, San Francisco Chronicle columnist Joe Garofoli wrote Tuesday. “There’s a huge libertarian vein running through Silicon Valley and Sen. The animal rights group dropped a lawsuit in New York state court last week seeking to out the identity of three anonymous Huffington Post commenters, who'd left unkind remarks about it following an April 4 exposé on the brutal conditions inside one of PETA's supposedly humane animal shelters.
