The Los Angeles startup said Thursday that Snapchat users will be able to chat by swiping right on a friend’s name. When users leave the chat screen, messages will be automatically deleted. Mashable The rollout added text messaging and video chatting. The latest version of the app focuses on helping its users have conversations, rather than just one-off picture and video messages. The Next Web “Until today [Thursday], we felt that Snapchat was missing an important part of conversation: presence. There’s nothing like knowing you have the full attention of your friend while you’re chatting. We could not be more thrilled to announce Chat,” the company writes in a blog post. The update hasn’t arrived in the App Store or Google Play yet, but when it does it will give the company’s estimated 40 million users a new way to connect that is much like other messaging apps, but with a Snapchat (ephemeral) twist. NBC News Now Snapchat looks like it could compete with WhatsApp, not to mention a host of ephemeral messaging apps like Confide and Wickr that popped up to cater to adults wary of an app with a reputation of being for sexting teens. Before, Snapchat users could only send text in the form of captions on photos, resulting in a lot of terrible pictures being sent for the sake of the messages that accompanied them. The New York Times/Bits Blog Snapchat’s last major update arrived in October, with a feature called Stories that let people post some of their Snapchats publicly, for all of their friends using the application to see. Comscore, a mobile and web analytics firm, said that in February, Snapchat attracted 20 million users to its mobile application, up from 4.5 million users a year ago.
