Tweeting Truck Lands on Mars, Internet Explodes With Joy (Mashable) Overcoming its “seven minutes of terror” — and winning the hearts of geeks worldwide — the 2,000-pound NASA Curiosity Rover landed on Mars at 1:39 Monday morning EST. The whole landing was live-tweeted from its official Twitter account, writing in what you might well call the voice of the Internet. Twitter The tweet from @MarsCuriosity confirming landing on Mars: "I'm safely on the surface of Mars. GALE CRATER I AM IN YOU!!!." Another tweet says: "To the entire team & fans back on Earth, thank you, thank you. Now the adventure begins. Let's dare mighty things together!" The New York Times A couple of minutes later, the first image popped onto the video screen – a grainy, 64-by-64-pixel black-and-white image showing one of the rover’s wheels and the Martian horizon. Three minutes later, a higher-resolution version of the same image appeared, and then came another image from the other side of the rover. Los Angeles Times Curiosity is expected to revolutionize the understanding of Mars, gathering evidence that Mars is or was capable of fostering life, probably in microbial form. The spacecraft is also expected to pave the way for important leaps in deep-space exploration, including bringing Martian rock or soil back to Earth for detailed analysis and, eventually, human exploration. CNN The spacecraft had been traveling away from Earth since Nov. 26 on a journey of approximately 352 million miles, according to NASA. Curiosity, which will be controlled from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has a full suite of sophisticated tools for exploring Mars. They include 17 cameras, a laser that can survey the composition of rocks from a distance and instruments that can analyze samples from soil or rocks. Nokia Might Unveil Windows Phone 8 Handsets at Nokia World (Bloomberg) Nokia plans to announce Windows Phone 8-based handsets as early as next month at its Nokia World event -- ahead of an expected Sept. 12 unveiling of the next version of the iPhone -- and have them for sale before the year-end holiday shopping season, said a person with knowledge of the matter, asking not to be identified because the plan isn’t public. Officials at Nokia declined to comment on the timing of its next Windows Phone handsets. The Next Web Signing a "strategic partnership" with Microsoft, Nokia has been pushing its Lumia range and sold 4 million handsets in its last quarter, finally giving investors a glimmer of hope that it could start to mount a proper challenge in the smartphone market against Apple and Samsung. While sales of the Lumia 610, Lumia 710, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 are starting to pick up, Nokia was forced to admit that its current handset models would not get an update to Windows Phone 8. Reuters Hacked Again: Twitter Account Sends Pro-Syrian Government Tweets (VentureBeat) Less than 48 hours after Reuters’ blogging platform got hacked, the news wire service once again confirmed being compromised — this time via Twitter. The first attack came Friday after Syrian hackers loyal to President Bashar al-Assad allegedly gained access to Reuters’ blogging platform, which they used to post a fake interview with rebel Free Syrian Army leader Riad al-Assad. Presumably, the same hackers are responsible for also compromising a Reuters Twitter account dedicated to technology news, which has about 17,500 followers. Journalist Blames Apple Tech for Allowing iCloud Hack (CNET) Former Gizmodo reporter Mat Honan is blaming an AppleCare technician for allowing his personal email and Twitter accounts to be hacked, as well as the tech blog's official feed. The Gizmodo breach, apparently perpetrated by a person or group of people calling themselves Clan W3, was brief but resulted in racist and offensive tweets being sent to the tech blog's 415,000 followers on Friday. YouTube Updates Homepage Feed, Gives Users More Control Over Featured Content (SocialTimes) YouTube has launched a new updated homepage. Kurt Wilms, product manager, reported on the YouTube Creator blog that the new design is a result of user feedback and features things like bigger video thumbnails, more control over what you see in your feed and more.
