Google Changes Terms to Add User Data to Web Ads (USA Today)
Users of Google’s services could soon see their profile name, profile photo or comments appear in online advertising. The company updated its Terms of Service to allow them to add users’ names, photos or comments in a series of ads called Shared Endorsements. Reuters The new types of ads would use personal information of the members of Google+, the social network launched by the company in 2011. If a Google+ user has publicly endorsed a particular brand or product by clicking on the +1 button, that person’s image might appear in an ad. The New York Times Google and Facebook say that with the most recent changes, they are trying to offer users more comprehensive and personalized services. The problem, privacy advocates say, is when Web companies use or display the personal information of users in ways the authors did not expect when they originally posted it. The Wall Street Journal/Digits The idea is that mom will want to know the stuff that you think is valuable. It’s very much the road Facebook is on – a move that drew a lot of fire. Keep in mind, though, that Facebook’s activity lives in context within Facebook’s site. Google has a much wider footprint. TechCrunch The news isn’t all bad: Google provides a way to opt out, allowing you to do so via your Google+ profile, and under-18 users won’t have any of their actions or info shared via ads at all. That’s loads better than Facebook’s policy, which doesn’t allow users to opt out of sponsored stories entirely, and which now also includes a provision that users can no longer remove themselves from search results by name.

Twitter to Dick Costolo in 2010: ‘You’re Fired … Sort of’ (CNET)
According to Nick Bilton’s forthcoming book, “Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal,” current CEO Dick Costolo was briefly fired during a tense Twitter board meeting in September 2010 when he was still COO, just weeks before he was to become chief executive of the company. According to the book, co-founders Jack Dorsey and Evan Williams and Twitter’s board were in disagreement about who should run the company. The board hadn’t been pleased with Williams’ efforts as CEO, and Dorsey was using that as leverage to try to find a new chief to replace him.

Klout and Microsoft’s Bing Team Up to Bring You Terrible Search Results (SocialTimes)
Klout and Bing have worked together previously, with Klout claiming to use search data to help determine an individual’s score (which is hilarious because so few people use Bing), but now on Bing, you’ll be able to see someone’s Klout score, and use Klout to personalize their People Snapshots feature. You would think there’s some good news here, but I’m having trouble seeing it.
