The ability to buy and send real gifts to your friends will gradually roll out to Facebook users in the United States. The New York Times/Bits Blog Gifts range from cupcakes to sunglasses. Facebook will earn a slice of the proceeds from each transaction; a company spokesman declined to say how much but said each partner company had a different revenue-sharing arrangement. USA Today Starbucks, Magnolia Bakery and 1-800-Flowers are among Facebook's 100 launch partners. Facebook's online commerce move comes as Wall Street grows restless for increased revenue from the social network, which faces slackening advertising revenue. The Huffington Post Users will be able to click on a "gifts" icon on their Facebook friends' pages on Facebook's website or on Android mobile phones, and iPhone and iPad versions are coming soon. The icon will also show up on the right side of users' Facebook pages with the notifications for friends' birthdays, weddings and other life events. Filmmaker Behind Anti-Islam Video is Arrested (Los Angeles Times) The filmmaker behind the anti-Islamic video that has sparked violence across the globe was arrested Thursday on suspicion of violating the terms of his probation, including allegedly lying about his role in the film's production. Magistrate Judge Suzanne H. Segal ordered Nakoula Basseley Nakoula detained, citing a "lengthy pattern of deception" by the man, adding that he poses "some danger to the community." Reuters The Brazilian unit of Google said on Thursday it had obeyed a court order to remove a video attacking a candidate in Brazilian municipal elections from its YouTube service after legal appeals were exhausted. "We are profoundly disappointed to not have the opportunity of openly debating our arguments in the electoral justice system that the videos were legitimate manifestations of the freedom of expression and should continue (to be) available in Brazil," said Fabio Coelho, director general of Google in Brazil in an emailed statement. CNET Coelho, who was arrested in Brazil over the YouTube videos, has been released, after agreeing to appear in court at an undetermined date. Jose Zagallo, head of the Brazilian bar association's commission focusing on information technology law, told the AP that Brazil's laws unfairly hold services like Google liable for content they cannot control. The Next Web Free speech has been a hot issue recently, after a buffoonish clip lampooning the Prophet Muhammad led to global protests, riots and violence. Google is taking a longer view on this issue, promising to “continue to campaign for free expression globally.” Twitter Decides to Play Nice With Search Engines (AllTwitter) It seems Twitter has quietly re-allowed search engines the ability to search public tweets and hashtags. Search Engine Land reports that “Twitter recently updated its robots.txt file ... [and this] opens up millions of pages to being crawled ... [by] Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex and other bots.” Microsoft Buys Influence for Bing With Klout Investment, Partnership (VentureBeat) Microsoft is buying a little influence for its No. 2 search engine. Thursday, the company announced a strategic investment in Klout, and a two-way technical partnership that brings influence-scoring technology to Bing and search data to Klout.
