Facebook Details its Commitment to Viewed Impressions for Ads (SocialTimes)
Facebook’s latest step toward giving its advertisers the most accurate measurement of the effectiveness of their campaigns is its focus on viewed impressions, as opposed to served impressions. Only counting and charging for impressions when they have occurred on-screen, and not merely been served, is not a new practice for Facebook, which used a Facebook for Business post to explain the differences between viewed impressions and served impressions, and why it focuses on the former. Wired Wednesday, for the first time, the company explicitly stated that it only uses viewed impressions to measure ad delivery across desktops, mobile devices, and, conceivably, other popular wearables with screens, such as the much-anticipated Apple Watch. It’s a stance that differs from the industry norm, according to Rebecca Lieb, an industry analyst with research outfit Altimeter Group. The Wall Street Journal Facebook has viewability challenges to overcome, most notably when it comes to measuring ads it helps serve and track on other publishers’ sites. Facebook cannot currently measure viewability rates for its mobile ad network product, for example. VentureBeat In a draft blog post on its ads philosophy, Facebook noted that a wide range of advertising partners, from Wendy’s to the ZenithOptiMedia Group, have lauded its approach, which, it said, measures up to a 2014 standard set by the Media Rating Council to count ads only when an “opportunity to see” them is established. Facebook did not explain why it chose now to elucidate its ad measurement methods.

Reddit decided last year to give away 10 percent of its ad revenue from 2014 to charity. It’s now closed its books and revealed that its total amounted to $8,276,594.93, which means it’ll be donating $827,659.49 to charity. As befits a site powered by its users, the company is putting the choice of the 10 charities that will benefit up to a public vote.
