Google Updates Hangouts with ‘Last Seen’ Timestamps, Smart Location Sharing, New Stickers and Video Filters (VentureBeat) Google today announced a major update to its Hangouts app for Android, and promised that the equivalent iOS update would be “coming soon.” The new features are aimed at making it easier to find your friends, know when they’re around and cut down the time you spend messaging in the app. The Wall Street Journal When someone asks “Where are you?” or something similar in a chat box, the app will recognize what was typed and prompt you to respond with GPS data. Tap that, and your location will appear in a little Google Map. TechCrunch Among the fun new features are 16 new sticker pages and a couple of Easter eggs (just type “woot” or “happy birthday” into a chat to see what those look like after you’ve installed the update). On the visual side, you can also now apply filters to your video chats (think sepia, vignette, black and white, etc.). Florida Professor Resigns After Offensive Facebook Comments (Business Insider/Reuters) A Florida State University professor said she has resigned after making racial and homosexual slurs in a heated Facebook exchange about recent police killings of unarmed blacks. Deborah O'Connor, an 18-year faculty member of the FSU College of Business, said on Tuesday she was stepping down after several comments she made on Facebook were published by Folio Weekly, a Jacksonville alternative newspaper that contacted FSU about them on Dec. 5.
