In-car commerce platform Cargo is bringing its boxes full of snacks and other retail products to cars in Los Angeles, with help from messaging application Snapchat and snack delivery service SnackNation.

Cargo does not have formal relationships with ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft (although it does have access to Uber’s application-programming interface), instead working directly with drivers.

Those drivers can go to Cargo’s website to sign up and receive their boxes, and Cargo said thousands of drivers are participating, having been reached through a mix of digital and referral marketing. The company said drivers can earn up to $300 per month in commissions, referrals and performance bonuses.

Cargo recently raised $5.5 million in venture funding, and the company aims to have its boxes in 20,000 vehicles by year-end. It is already up and running in New York; Boston; Chicago; Minneapolis; Washington, D.C.; Baltimore; Atlanta; and Dallas, and the Los Angeles launch marks its West Coast debut.

Snapcodes will be printed on Cargo boxes in Los Angeles, enabling riders to open their Snapchat apps, scan those Snapcodes and browse and select products directly via the app. Snapchat lenses from Cargo’s brand partners can also be unlocked.

Riders can order complimentary and retail products such as Red Bull, RXBAR protein bars, Matcha Lip Balm by Winky Lux, SmartyPants Vitamins, hangover cures, beauty products, travel electronics and snacks curated by SnackNation, which will provide Cargo with data and guidance to help formulate a regional and seasonal merchandising strategy to stock its boxes.

SnackNation’s selection for the Los Angeles launch includes Halfpops Simply Sea Salt Curiously Crunchy Popcorn, Nothing but the Fruit’s Raspberry Chia Real Fruit Bites and Yomms Coco Twist Deli Nuts. Also, to help celebrate Cargo’s West Coast debut, Red Bull will offer complimentary energy drinks and RXBAR will provide free all-natural protein bars.

Riders in Cargo-equipped cars in Los Angeles can access its storefront directly via the Snapchat app by scanning the Snapcode on the cargo box. Here’s how it works for those in other areas:

  • Visit the Cargo mobile menu on a smartphone.
  • Enter the driver’s unique box code, which is found on the box.
  • Select their desired products. If they are free, check out. If they are available for purchase, pay via mobile wallet or credit card.
  • Once the vehicle is stopped, the driver will hand the product or products to the rider.
