SF Mayor Newsom to Speak at Town Hall Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA–(Marketwire – June 25, 2009) – The Honorable Gavin Newsom, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, will speak to TOWN HALL Los Angeles on “Healthy San Francisco: A Local Model for Universal Coverage and National Reform,” and take questions from Angelenos on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at the Sofitel Los Angeles.

Regarding Healthy San Francisco, the city’s health care service initiative that debuted July 2, 2007, Newsom said, “As Mayor of San Francisco, the first city to offer universal access for the uninsured, I know that America’s cities can provide compassionate and innovative health care to their residents.” Healthy San Francisco serves all uninsured city residents, regardless of a person’s employment status, immigration status, or preexisting medical condition. Residents with income at or below 500% of the Federal Poverty Level are eligible; two-thirds of the estimated 60,000 uninsured adult residents are currently enrolled. On July 1, 2009, the program will add Kaiser Permanente as a provider of care to the uninsured.

An advocate on issues of civil rights, Newsom gained national attention for granting marriage licenses in San Francisco to same-sex couples and officiated at a wedding during the brief time period when same-sex marriages were legal in California.

Newsom was sworn in as the 42nd Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco in 2004 and re-elected in 2007. His initiatives promote the city as a center for biotech and clean tech. The city’s volunteer initiative, Project Homeless Connect, has attracted 20,000 San Franciscans to aid the homeless. The county’s Family Independence Initiative is designed to alleviate poverty utilizing micro-payment incentives.
