<i>Scientific American</i> Celebrates Its 165th Anniversary

A big congratulations is in order for Scientific American: the magazine turns 165 tomorrow, making it the longest continually running magazine in the U.S. since it first launched as a weekly publication in 1845. To celebrate, the magazine is running several special features, including a slideshow on its website called "A Visual History of Science, from the Pages of Scientific American". The series includes 20 images of scientific discoveries and milestones over the years, such as an invention that might be of particular interest to journalists -- "Hoe's Mammoth Rotary Printing Press," built in 1851. Additionally, Scientific American's editor in chief, Mariette DiChristina, has written a special editor's letter commemorating the anniversary, which can also be seen online. She writes: This is Scientific American's 165-year heritage as the country's oldest continuously published magazine. Yet in every issue, the magazine is new again, with its scientist authors, many of them Nobel Prize winners, and top journalists describing the latest in science and technology. In this edition, feature articles cover everything from threats to the computers we now rely on ("The Hacker in Your Hardware,") to devices that will make "fantastic voyages" in medicine a reality ("Robot Pills,") to extrasolar Earth-like planets that might harbor life ("Planets We Could Call Home,"). Fittingly, we include a special report on "Origins". So Happy Birthday to Scientific American this month. We hope you will join us in celebrating the renewal and positive force of science in our world every day. The print edition will feature a 4-page spread that, instead of looking at 50 scientific milestones that occurred 150 years ago, will delve into those from 165 years ago to show readers what else was going on when the magazine made its debut. And, as for that image at the top of this post, it's Scientific American's original logo, which will be running on the magazine's site throughout its anniversary weekend. We asked DiChristina what readers have to look forward to in the magazine's next 165 years and she told us that, in keeping with Scientific American's dedication to showcasing the latest advancements in technology, it is looking into expanding across platforms in order to make sure that readers receive a variety of information in ways that make sense -- such as, for example, the aforementioned slideshow and digital content.
