SB Nation ups executive editor Elena Bergeron to editor in chief, a title she will be originating for the Vox Media-owned sports site. Another SB Nation staffer, Kevin Lockland, also gets a new role, moving from vice president of editorial to general manager, where he will focus on the business side of the site, including partnership development.

In her new role, Bergeron will focus the site’s energies on the area that she feels differentiates SB Nation from other sports sites–the concerns of sports fans, all the sports fans, for whom the site was essentially created. “From a brand standpoint, we still call ourselves the voice of the fan,” Bergeron told Poynter’s Benjamin Mullin in an interview. “We want to keep that ethos, and we want to keep that scrappiness, because we don’t have [game] rights.”

It was an idea echoed by Vox Media editorial director Lockhart Steele, who told Mullin, “Everyone who’s bigger than us is ESPN or is affiliated with a major broadcast network. We don’t have that. But what we do have is the ability to play a really important part in the conversations that are happening among sports fans.”

That push will be accompanied by a substantial amount of new hires the publication will be taking on in the near future.
