Saudi Arabia & UAE Plan to Ban Some BlackBerry Network Functions

BBC News reports that both the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia plan to ban BlackBerry messaging features that route data outside of their countries.

Two Gulf states to ban some Blackberry functions

The UAE plans to ban the following features starting on October 11:

– Email
– Internet (app/web?) access
– Instant messaging to other BlackBerry devices

Saudi Arabia plans to start banning BlackBerry-to-BlackBerry instant messaging sometime this month.

India’s government has expressed similar concerns in the past.
