RootsAction Hosts Thursday News Conference on James Risen Case

risenBOn Thursday, RootsAction will host a news conference in support of New York Times reporter James Risen, facing prison for refusing to name a confidential source.

Risen, a Pulitzer Prize winner, is the author of the 2006 book State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration, In 2008, he was first subpoenaed to name a source of his book pertaining to a CIA operation in Iran.

The New York Times reported in June, that, “After more than six years of legal wrangling, the case — the most serious confrontation between the government and the press in recent history — will reach a head in the coming weeks.”

At the news conference, a petition – that has already garnered more than 125,000 signatures – in support of Risen and free press will be presented to the U.S. Department of Justice. RootsAction has also gathered statements of support for Risen from 14 Pulitzer Prize winning reporters.

Individuals from the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, the Government Accountability Project, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and Reporters Without Borders will speak at the event, as will Emmy and Peabody recipient Phil Donahue.
