There’s no denying it – robots are awesome. And they just keep getting more and more awesome with every passing year, whether they’re playing the violin, giving birth (for real!), helping sick kids attend school or wandering into the local coffee shop to order a scone. That’s why this week, inspired by some sick new robot clips that just hit the Web, we’ve decided to put together a list of ten of the coolest robots on YouTube.
Lyndon Baty – Robot Boy (Awesome tech!)
Let’s start with an uplifting robot video that hit YouTube last month. Lyndon Baty suffers from polycystic kidney disease and has virtually no immune system. He says, “All of last year I was either in the hospital or at home doing all my work and I had no social interaction whatsoever.” But now, thanks to new robotic technology Lyndon is able to go to school, via a robot, and interact with his friends and classmates. So cool!
Geminoid DK Mechanical Test
Robots are getting more and more lifelike. A video that hit YouTube last week and has 608,000 views so far shows the testing of a new humanoid robot, Geminoid DK. He can blink, smile and hunch his shoulders “almost” like a real person.
ACTROID-F in AIST Open Lab 2010 02
I wonder what Geminoid DK would think of Actroid-F. This video hit YouTube last fall and has over 2.8 million views. Pretty amazing stuff, right?
Iron Man has gotten a lot of people thinking about exoskeletons and wondering if they’ll ever become a reality. This neat clip shows the fruits of Japanese exoskeleton, or “Skeletonics” research. The real action starts around 3:30.
Robot Orders a Scone in Mountain View, CA
What would you think if you were standing in line at a coffee shop and a robot came in and ordered a scone? Who would have thought that robots liked scones? I would have taken them for more of the “micro-chip” cookie types.
This amazing video of a robot playing the violin has over 4.1 million views. The robot was unveiled by Toyota.
Pregnant Robot Trains Students
We told you that there were robots out there giving birth. Meet Noel. Noel is a robot that simulates the labor and birthing process to help train medical students.
This guy looks more like a Decepticon, if you ask me!
This robot fish is absolutely beautiful. I can’t stop watching him. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that he looks just like The Rainbow Fish.
Robot shows how to solve Rubiks Cube
Finally, check out this awesome Rubik’s Cube-solving robot, RuBot II. There are two videos – the first shows RuBot II solving the cube, and the second is a news report. This robot is definitely more capable than I am in the Rubik’s Cube department. If you like this video, check out our list of 10 Unbelievable Rubik’s Cube Feats.
