Rio 2016: 1.5 Billion Facebook Interactions; 916 Million on Instagram

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games spurred 1.5 billion interactions from 277 million unique users on Facebook and 916 million interactions from 131 million Instagram users from Aug. 5 through 21.

Facebook said in an email to SocialTimes that the five posts that tallied the most likes, comments and shares during Rio 2016 were:

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo congratulates Usain Bolt (below).
  2. Neymar following Brazil’s gold-medal victory in soccer.
  3. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates P.V. Sindhu.
  4. Zac Efron surprising Simone Biles.
  5. Bolt posing with one of his gold medals.

The five “loudest” countries on Facebook were:

  1. Brazil
  2. U.S.
  3. U.K.
  4. Mexico
  5. India

Facebook said 15.2 million people used its Olympics temporary profile picture frames, and the top three countries were:

  1. India
  2. Philippines
  3. Pakistan

The moment that spurred the greatest use of the Love Reaction was Efron’s photo with Biles (below).

The top five athletes overall in terms of interactions from Aug. 5 through 22 were:

  1. Michael Phelps
  2. Bolt
  3. Neymar
  4. Biles
  5. Katie Ledecky

And the top events were:

  1. Swimming
  2. Gymnastics
  3. Track
  4. Soccer
  5. Beach volleyball

Finally, Facebook pointed out that a Facebook Live broadcast by Phelps (embedded below), during which he confirmed his retirement, was the most-viewed Facebook Live post by an athlete during the games, and at the time of this post, it was nearing 4 million views.

As for Instagram, the top five moments during the Summer Olympics, ranked by the moments when the most users were interacting with content, were:

  1. Bolt winning the gold medal in the 100-meter dash.
  2. The U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team (#FinalFive) winning gold in the team final.
  3. Phelps winning his 23rd and final gold medal in the 4X100 meter medley relay.
  4. Ledecky winning the gold medal in the women’s 800-meter freestyle.
  5. Biles winning the gold for individual all-around for women’s gymnastics.

The athletes who received the most mentions, likes and comments within Olympics-related content during the Games were:
