Retro Atari Games Now Available For Android

Long time video game enthusiasts might appreciate the ability to play retro games on current mobile devices. If you count yourself amongst the enthusiast crowd and have a device running Android, you will be happy to know that Atari’s Greatest Hits is now available in the Android Market after being available for iOS since April.

Included in the collection of “greatest hits” are 100 classic Atari arcade games and Atari 2600 games. The player app is a free download and includes Missile Command. The greatest hits collection includes 25 separate game packs that cost $.99 each, or if you wish, you can buy all 100 games for $9.99.

Atari’s Greatest Hits utilizes in-app purchasing, and you cannot buy the games directly from the Android Market. Unfortunately, the in-app purchasing process is not working for me this evening. Each of my attempts to purchase a game pack resulted in the purchase being canceled because the transaction timed out. Fortunately, I received e-mail confirmations from Google Checkout confirming the orders were cancelled and not charged to my credit card. Hopefully Google and Atari will work out the kinks with in-app purchasing.

To play the games you operate controls that appear on the touchscreen. For example, to play Missile Command you need to slide your finger over a circle that is about 1-inch in diameter to aim your missile and tap another on-screen button to fire. I found it difficult to keep my thumb centered on the larger circle as it keep sliding off the spot on the screen.

If you are looking for games with the latest graphics and sound, Atari’s Greatest Hits are not for you as these games retain their original ’70s and ’80s era video quality and sound. However, if you have found memories of playing Atari arcade games then you will enjoy this offering from Atari.
