In response to the violence many journalists face in the field, the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) today launched an app with support and networking built in, Reporta.

Through Reporta, any journalist can send pictures, audio and video to pre-selected personal and professional contacts to keep them updated as to their location and safety levels. When a journalist is in true danger, they can also send out an SOS alert through the app.

Reporta, released today on iOS and Android, is available in French, Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish, Turkish, and English.

IWMF executive director Elisa Lees Muñoz talked with reporter Abena Agyeman-Fisher about the app in a press briefing:

(We talked with journalists) in Jordan, in Uganda, in Mexico, and Lebanon and got user feedback in those countries and then we went through a two month period of user testing…and implemented those details that were important to us.
