Report: Messenger, Facebook Led Worldwide App Downloads in Q2 2019

Messenger, Facebook and WhatsApp were the top three apps for worldwide downloads on iOS and Android combined

Mobile data and analytics company App Annie released its Q2 2019 Market Index Ranking Report, which looked at worldwide application downloads and user spending in the second quarter of 2019.

The report showed that worldwide, users downloaded over 30.3 billion apps in Q2 2019, with social media apps dominating the top downloads chart for iOS and Android combined.

The top 10 apps for worldwide downloads on iOS and Android combined were:

In sixth place for Q2, Snapchat rose three spots on the chart from the first quarter of 2019. In a blog post, Lexi Sydow, senior market insights manager at App Annie, said, “Snapchat saw a surge in downloads with the release of new augmented reality filters and its new, faster Android mobile app.”

In terms of consumer spending, Tinder, Netflix and Tencent Video were the top three apps worldwide on iOS and Android combined in Q2. YouTube came in fifth.

Sydow said, “YouTube broke into the top five by consumer spend as more consumers turn to mobile to stream their favorite content and users subscribe to unlock YouTube’s paid features including ad-free, offline play, background play and access to exclusive content.”

Overall, global consumer spending was up 20% year-over-year on both iOS and Android in Q2. Looking at non-gaming apps, App Annie said photo and video, entertainment and music apps were the biggest contributors to this year-over-year growth on iOS, while social, productivity and lifestyle apps were the biggest drivers of year-over-year spending growth on Android.

Finally, looking at monthly active users, App Annie found that social media apps once again dominated the app landscape.

Specifically, for Q2 2019, the top 10 apps by MAUs across iOS and Android combined were:
