RD Targets Game Fans With First iPhone App

Reader’s Digest is now tackling iPhone/iPod Touch apps—the first of which it says will be for gamers.

The app, called Life IQ, represents the first in a line of future products that RD parent Reader’s Digest Association plans to create as part of its previously announced “Reader’s Digest Version” strategy. The idea is to repackage RD content into shortened versions for various platforms.

The Life IQ app is a trivia game designed to test readers’ knowledge of food, home, health and technology facts. The app is free, though RD may add paid upgrades over time.

Reader’s Digest is also developing an app version of Word Power, a grammar column that runs in print for rollout later this year.

“Our content is perfectly suited to the mobile platform which is utility based,” said Jonathan Hills, general manager, RD.com. “It’s part of a bigger plan to look at ways to repackage content to work on multiple platforms. It sets the tone for the lifestyle utility apps we’re looking at.”
