Mobile developer Plain Vanilla has today announced it has closed a $2 million Series A1 funding round, led by Sequoia Capital and e.Ventures. The company’s mobile trivia game QuizUp launched earlier this month to quick success, with over 1.5 million registered users trying the game.

Over 70 million games have been played in QuizUp, which asks players to answer trivia questions in over 250 categories, ranging from movies and sports to the arts. Players have clocked in over 220 years of total cumulative playtime since the game’s launch on November 7.

“We are delighted to see the phenomenal reception of QuizUp,” says Thor Fridriksson, founder and CEO of Plain Vanilla Games, in a company statement. “Engagement is going through the roof, people are playing, chatting, and adding friends at a rate that is way beyond anything we anticipated. We are gratified by the enthusiasm and support of our investors and this provides a great vote of confidence for our mission to help connect people from around the world through shared passions and interests.”

The funding round was closed before the launch of QuizUp, but e.Ventures co-founder and managing partner Mathias Schilling says he expected the game to be big.

“We anticipated the run-away organic growth of Plain Vanilla’s QuizUp app even before it launched. It was obvious to us that there were no similar apps on the market with this level of depth and virality,” said Schilling. “QuizUp is simultaneously addictive and educational, with 250 topics ranging from sports to the arts. We believe Thor and his team will make a substantial impact on the market.”

QuizUp is now available to download for free on iOS. An Android version is currently in development. Check back soon to follow QuizUp on AppData, our tracking service for mobile and social apps and developers.
