Quayle is to Kennedy as Arial is to Helvetica

In response to the several emails I’ve received along the lines of “You DO know that Arial is a cheap imitation of Helvetica, DON’T you?” The answer is: Yes, yes I do.

For context, let’s review some history for a moment.Based on this infamous bit of vice presidential debate history:

Quayle:

“I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency.”

Bentsen: “Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.” (Omaha, Nebraska, October 5, 1988)

One might think that I equate the Arial with Kennedy, not the other way around. (In my initial post about Helvetica and Arial, I said “I have met Arial, and you, Helvetica are no Arial.”)

For the record: I’m a blue state girl through and through. If my craven manipulation of a historical quote made it seem otherwise, I’m deeply sorry.

An aside: In my Helvetica Arial online travels this morning, I ran across this quiz. Why not test your font knowledge?

arial or helvetica?
