Agency is auctioning off the super high-frequency waves necessary for the tech

The Federal Communication Commission has begun its first-ever auction of rights to broadcast at a range of super high-frequency waves—a key step in the march towards the next generation of wireless service.

These so-called millimeter waves—previously considered unusable for cell service because of their short range—are able to translate more data at faster speeds, making 5G networks more practical. But doing so requires hundreds of thousands more low-power antennas—and thus, more local fees and review processes.
