Promotions at Essence Communications’ Sales and Corporate Accounts Departments

Essence Communications, publisher of the eponymous magazine directed at African-American women, today promoted Paul Johnson to Midwest Director and Danielle Brown to Account Director of Essence, the company announced in a statement.

Johnson moves up from Midwest Sales Manager, and Brown moves up from Corporate Account manager. Going forward, Johnson will oversee the Midwest sales staff and Essence’s account with consumer-goods manufacturer Procter & Gamble, as well as multi-platform marketing. After having worked on Essence’s food accounts with Burger King, KFC, Kraft and Subway, Brown will shift her focus to beauty accounts, the company said.

(New York, NY — March 2, 2010) — ESSENCE has promoted Paul Johnson to the position of Midwest Director and Danielle M. Brown to the position of Account Director of ESSENCE; it was announced today by Essence Communications president, Michelle Ebanks. Both Johnson and Brown will continue to report to ESSENCE National Sales Director, Colin Mitchell.

As Midwest Sales Manager, Johnson was responsible for developing more than $1.5 million in new digital revenue for and more than $2 million in sponsorship revenue during last year’s 15th anniversary of the Essence Music Festival. In his new role as Midwest Director, Johnson will be responsible for managing the Midwest Sales staff along with the brand’s relationship with the Procter & Gamble account while overseeing marketing programs across multiple platforms.

Previously, Brown served as the Corporate Account Manager for ESSENCE and broke new ground with food-industry giants Burger King, KFC, Kraft and Subway. More recently, Brown has introduced multi-platform partnerships with both Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson, including the latter’s sponsored eight-page insert focused on parenting. Brown cemented an impressive multi-year and multi-million dollar partnership with Coca-Cola as well. As Account Director, Brown’s primary focus will be on beauty accounts.

Johnson graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. He received his MBA in Marketing from the University of Iowa. Johnson currently resides in Chicago, Illinois where he is the treasurer of the Chicago Magazine Association.

Brown graduated from Hampton University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. She currently resides in Douglaston, NY.
