Project Kangaroo, BBC.com Build-Out Sink BBC Worldwide

BBCLogo.jpgThe good news: Excluding the effects of its investment in Project Kangaroo and its build-out of BBC.com, BBC Worldwide reported an increase of 56.2% in digital-media sales, to £34.2 million, with BBC.com’s non-United Kingdom advertising contributing £10.2 million in its first year. The bad news: the £8.9 million from closing operations including Kangaroo count, tripling the company’s total digital loss to £31.7 million from £10.9 million, paidContent:UK reported.

Even without that charge, BBC Worldwide’s digital operating loss doubled to £22.8 million from £10.9 million.

On the good-news front, BBC.com reached an average of 50 million monthly users so far in 2009; video repository BBC Motion Gallery’s online sales rose 28% (although its losses rose from £600,000 to £2 million) and income from distribution to channels such as YouTube, MySpace and Babelgum rose to £10 million from £7 million.
