<em>Politico's</em> New Button Demystified

Politico has a new button on its home page navigation bar leading to the 2010 page. The point: to ramp up coverage of this year's midterm elections. Today they have a big red banner up so it's easy to spot. The explanation is a little hairy for non-techy types: "The page is like 44 and Click-a kind of composite between a traditional subpage and a blog. The page will be overseen by Charlie Mahtesian, the mastermind of all our political coverage," writes Editor-in-Chief John Harris in an e-mail to staff. Alex Burns will be deputy political editor of the 2010 page. He'll work closely with politics scribe Jessica Taylor. Burns (who apparently will never sleep but maybe they'll let him eat and shower once in awhile) is responsible for the "Morning Score" e-mail digest that has been going out for the past week. That e-mail goes out at dawn (when Burns will purportedly be "taking the dawn" as VandeHarris types like to say). This is the formal unveiling of something that has been in "soft launch" for a couple weeks -- our effort to make sure that POLITICO is the essential destination for anyone following this year's crucial midterm elections. The page is like 44 and Click-a kind of composite between a traditional subpage and a blog. The page will be overseen by Charlie Mahtesian, the mastermind of all our political coverage. We have seen on 44 that the hour-to-hour and even minute-by-minute demands of these pages can be all-consuming. So it was a short step from this realization to the conclusion that we should enlist Alex Burns, who has helped shepherd the 44 page to great success, to bring his expertise to bear on the 2010 page. We are making Alex the deputy political editor, working with Charlie and taking daily responsibility for the 2010 page as well as the new and ambiguously named "Morning Score" email digest that's been going out at dawn for the past week. On both products, Alex will be working closely with Jessica Taylor and the entire politics team. He'll also continue to devote some of his time to 44. A number of people deserve thanks for helping bring the 2010 page to life-Ryan Mannion and his team, Danielle Jones, Kim Kingsley, Vaughn Ververs, and Jessica.
