YouTube Video Likens Pledge Of Allegiance To Brainwashing

There’s no better time than a patriotic holiday like Memorial Day to spread the word about an un-patriotic matter.

There’s no better time than a patriotic holiday like Memorial Day to spread the word about an un-patriotic matter.  A new YouTube video likening the United States Pledge Of Allegiance to brain washing has been spreading like wildfire over Memorial Day weekend and into the beginning of this week.  The video, a clip from the sketch comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’ Know features a classroom full of kids saying the Pledge with a twist, and has raked in over half a million views so far.

The video took off over the weekend, after being posted on sites like The Daily What and Reddit.  The kids in the video begin normally, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.”  But they continue in quite a different way.  “Thank you very, very much for letting us little kids live here.  It really, really was nice of you.  You didn’t have to do it and it’s really not creepy to have little, little kids mindlessly recite this anthem every day and pledge their life to a government before they’re old enough to really think about what they’re saying.  This is not a form of brain washing.”

The video was #19 Top Rated in Entertainment in the United States and #1 Top Rated in Entertainment in Australia this week.  Apparently down under they think our anthem is just as entertaining as we think their planking trend is.  But in all seriousness, the video sparked some pretty interesting Memorial Day conversation.

A lot of commenters reminisced about having to say the Pledge of Allegiance when they were young, wondering and asking why and being forced to recite it anyway.  One international YouTuber was surprised saying, “SERIOUSLY you guys have to say this every day in school? WTF, I honestly thought it was a joke.”

What do you think about this video?  How do you feel about the fact that it went viral on Memorial Day and what do you think about the Pledge of Allegiance in general?  Check out the video and then share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
