Plants vs. Zombies 2 Receives 1980s Content Update

The Neon Mixtape Tour: Side A update introduces nine new zombies, four new plants and 16 1980s-themed levels to players.

EA Mobile has released the latest major content update for its popular mobile tower defense game, Plants vs. Zombies 2. Entitled ‘Neon Mixtape Tour: Side A,’ the 1980s-themed update introduces new plants, zombies and levels to the game, which were shown off in a recent developer diary.

With this update, players can complete 16 new 1980s-themed levels, including a Gargantuar Battle. These stages have a music-based mechanic, which triggers certain zombies’ special abilities when their particular song is playing. For instance, the Punk Zombie can kick plants and push them back across tiles (or even off of the board), while the MC Zom-B will use his microphone as a swinging weapon, quickly defeating nearby plants in one or two swings. Another new enemy, the Glitter Zombie, will create a protective shield which protects the zombies in the row behind her until she’s defeated.

Players have access to four new plants to combat these enemies. To start, the Phat Beet sends shockwaves across the board, damaging nearby zombies in a circle around the plant. Next, the Celery Stalker will hide underground as zombies approach and pass over it, but when the path is clear, will pop up and attack these zombies to the left. In addition, the Thyme Warp plant can help players out of a tricky spot, as it teleports living zombies back to the start of the board.

Finally, players can purchase the Cactus, a premium plant which fires thorns at zombies, but will hide underground when zombies get too close. While hidden, the Cactus will still damage the zombies walking on top of it.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store and Google Play. The game has been downloaded more than 100 million times since its release in 2013.
