Pinterest Picks Up Instagram’s Ball And Runs With It

Instagram make have been justified in its decision to stop helping users to post their pretty pics to Twitter, but it may have been a foolish move in the game of social media platform dominance.

Pinterest appears to have joined forces with Twitter – or to have at least decided to kneel before Zod. Mwahahaha.

While hipsters everywhere were distracted by the dramatic Instagram-initiated split, no one noticed the other visual giant and traffic booster, Pinterest, made a pretty important move.

Gigaom reports that Pinterest added support for Twitter cards last week – just as Instagram removed it.

Pinterest tends to be a little quieter than other social networks but has a passionate userbase, so not surprisingly the change was noted by Kelly Lieberman, a Pinterest user and social media manager, who noted this weekend that photos pinned on Pinterest and cross-posted to Twitter were showing up in-stream.

Update: A Pinterest spokeswoman has confirmed the addition of support for Twitter cards at the beginning of last week.

And to refresh your memory: “Enabling Twitter cards allows a service whose content is posted to Twitter to have that content appear in-stream, by tapping a tweet to expand and view photos, videos, or article previews.”

So now users are seeing (and clicking, sharing and driving traffic back to) Pinterest-initiated posts but not so for Instagram. That has to sting you Instagrammarians, hmm?
