Phablets Gaining Global Popularity

Samsung NoteThe number of phablets shipped last year reached 20 million, a figure that will jump up to 120 million by 2018, according to Juniper Research.

Phablets, those bulky smartphone, tablet-like devices (Juniper defines it as a smartphone with a 5.6-inch display) will be particularly popular in Asian markets, including among South Korean gamers and Chinese video streamers looking for a higher quality screen, the research group predicts.

Android and Windows will drive the emerging category with the Nokia Lumia leading Windows and the Samsung Note series leading Android. Juniper cautioned that if a rumored Apple phablet turns out to be true, well, “this dynamic could change dramatically.”
