PEJ: Christmas Day Terror Attempt Tops Twitter, Newspapers, Blogs

The attempted explosion of Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit Christmas Day topped the list of news-related Twitter links from Dec. 28-Jan. 3, at 23%, according to Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s New Media Index.

According to PEJ, many of the tweets involved a report on about two bloggers who were visited at their homes by Transportation Security Administration agents after publishing a new TSA directive that revised screening procedures and put new restrictions on passengers.

PEJ added that this marked the first time since it began monitoring top stories on Twitter in June that the same subject sat atop the Twitter list, the newspaper front-page list and the blog list.

Nos. 2-5 on the Twitter list were: the discovery of 500 animal remains believed to have been sacrificed as part of a Santeria religious ritual in a Philadelphia home (19%); the mysterious disappearance of the San Francisco sea lions from Pier 39 (14%); new protests and developments in Iran (8%); and Korean-American missionary Robert Park, who was believed to be held in North Korea (7%).
