PBS Documentary Earth Days to Debut on Facebook

PBS documentary Earth Days will debut on the network April 19, but the 102-minute film will debut on Facebook eight days earlier, allowing the social-networking site’s users to watch and interact with director Robert Stone and executive producer Mark Samels in real-time, The New York Times reported.

Earth Days
examines the beginnings of the American environmental movement, and the films has already gone on a 40-city theatrical tour and debuted at film festivals, the Times reported.

The Facebook screening will use Brand Networks‘ new social-screening application, which integrates a customized video player, a proprietary poll system, and Facebook’s comment box, according to the Times.

Samels told the Times:

It’s an opportunity, we think, to engage with a new audience, an audience that we may not be bringing to PBS Monday nights at 9 o’clock. It’s such a distancing medium that we work in, in television. You put all this work into something, and then it goes into this black hole, the ether.
