Oprah now queen of all media

News came today that XM Satellite Radio has signed a three-year, $55 million deal with Oprah Winfrey to introduce a channel on the top U.S. subscription radio service.

Unsurprisingly, XM shares shot up 10 percent on the news.

This is our feeling: “Oprah” has been the No. 1 talk show for 20 consecutive yers and gets almost 50 million viewers weekly. For XM, this is the bargain of the century, especially given how much Sirius is banking on Howard Stern driving subscriptions. Sure, Sirius beat subscriber growth
expectations and more than quintupled revenue in the fourth quarter
of last year, but it also saw its net losses shoot into a low-earth orbit of over a quarter of a billion dollars. james.jpeg.jpg

We are also just plain releived that this deal won’t take effect until this September. I mean, can you imagine how poor James Frey might have fared as a guest on Oprah’s radio show, sans FCC restrictions?
