In a recent talk at the Beet.TV Executive Retreat, Joy Marcus, venture partner at DFJ Gotham Venture and formerly of Dailymotion, brings up some interesting points about video discovery.  Marcus says, “I think discovery in the video space is still problematic.”

Marcus explains the big problem with online video discovery—metadata.  She says, “the behemoths in search, really Google and Bing, to a certain degree, are text driven algorithms.”  If you don’t have the right title, description and tags then it can be very hard for viewers to discover your video content.

Marcus says that when she was at Dailymotion, “about 60 or 70 percent of our traffic came from search engines so we actually did well in search, but we worked very, very hard at descriptors for our videos.”
