The Onion Apologizes For Vulgar Tweet About Nine-Year-Old

Did you catch the horrible tweet @TheOnion sent out during the Oscars last night about nine-year-old actress, Quvenzhané Wallis? Someone tweeting from the mostly-hilarious satire site went rogue and called the little girl (brace yourselves) a c*nt. No joke. Followers were NOT happy about it and The Onion has since apologized for the gaffe - but is it enough? If you're not familiar with The Onion, it's responsible for creating wildly hilarious satire mimicking (and often being mistaken for) genuine articles with a 'ripped from the headlines' feel. And its writers were, of course, in full effect last night: But then for some inexplicable, head-up-your-ass reason, someone from The Onion sent out a terrible tweet about nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis: Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c*nt, right? And there was no asterisk - not that it would've helped. The reaction was swift, with folks calling them out for being so completely out of line and just NOT funny. The tweet was deleted within an hour. And today, The Onion's CEO posted this apology: Dear Readers, On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive—not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting. No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire. The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again. In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible. Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry. Sincerely, Steve Hannah CEO The Onion Seem inadequate to you too? Well, at least he's trying. According to Buzzfeed, some former Onion staffers also take issue with this apology - but not because they found it inadequate, no sir. They think he shouldn't have apologized at all - and The Onion definitely should NOT have taken the tweet down. Is it opposite day and no one told me?
