Rem Koolhaas and the OMA gang have emerged victorious in the competition to design the Lujiazui Exhibiton Center in an Shanghai. Located along the Huangpu River, the project is sited on the former Shanghai shipyard, with the new exhibition center positioned on the ramp of what was once a ship cradle. OMA conceived the building as a “spatial armature,” suspended above a plaza and connected to another exhibition space beneath the ramp. “The building’s materiality and architecture establish a dialogue with the site’s industrial past,” according to OMA, “a mysterious object wrapped in a metallic mesh exposes its steel structure, echoing the unfinished ship hulls which used to populate the site.”
