Obama Subsidizes COBRA In "Stopgap" Measure

President Barack Obama last week extended the federal COBRA subsidy for another month, ensuring that workers laid off in March will receive a 65 percent, 15-month premium subsidy. It’s a “stopgap” measure, Workforce reports, until more permanent legislation clears both the House and the Senate—that legislation, H.R. 4213, would extend federal COBRA subsidies through December 31.

The subsidy was first signed into law last year and continues to be an important lifeline in the healthcare situations of the unemployed, as continuing health insurance coverage with no employer subsidy can easily clear $1000 a month in premiums.
