‘NYT Magazine’ Editor Chris Suellentrop Moving to Yahoo

Will become deputy editor of Yahoo News

Chris Suellentrop, former story editor at The New York Times Magazine, is joining the Yahoo News blog network as its deputy editor starting Aug. 8, reports The Cutline (which happens to be one of those Yahoo blogs, along with The Upshot and The Lookout, among others).

“As a Web-native journalist with a strong background in long-form magazine editing, Chris is ideally suited to guide the smart, fast-moving and ambitious reporting and analysis that the Upshot team has made its stock in trade,” said Chris Lehmann, editor of Yahoo News.

At the Times Magazine, Suellentrop edited articles including Mark Leibovich's April 2010 piece on Politico's Mike Allen, which won the National Magazine Award for profile writing, and the recent story of Jose Antonio Vargas’ coming out as an illegal immigrant. Before joining the magazine, Suellentrop was an editor at the Times’ opinion desk, and was the newspaper’s first blogger when he launched the Opinionator blog in 2006.

“The Internet's always been the most interesting thing in the world to me during my career,” Suellentrop said of his move. “This isn't to say that the Times doesn't have an incredibly sophisticated website, but there's something fun about the idea of going back and being a pioneer again and sort of trying to figure this stuff out.”

He also hinted at plans to increase the amount of in-depth journalism featured in the Yahoo blogs. “Online readers have a huge appetite for long-form journalism,” he said. “There's no reason Yahoo News can't swim in that pool.”
