A changing of the guard.

The New York Times has named Elisabeth Bumiller its new Washington bureau chief. She most recently served as ‎deputy Washington bureau chief.

Bumiller succeeds Carolyn Ryan, who has been named senior politics editor. Ryan had served as Washington bureau chief since 2013.

“Elisabeth comes to the job with broad experience working overseas, writing books and covering the life of Washington as a Post style writer,” wrote Times executive editor Dean Baquet, in a  memo. “With her commanding knowledge and spirit, I am confident she will guide our stellar Washington bureau as it covers all aspects of this defining chapter.”
