NY Times Layoffs Begin

Those layoffs at The New York Times that we’ve been hearing about have officially begun. According to a memo from the Newspaper Guild of New York, the Times is cutting 21 union members, and employees will get notice today or tomorrow.

With 57 union members and about 30 non-union members accepting a buyout, the Times will exceed its stated goal of reducing the newsroom by 100.

“Discharged employees will be presented with a severance package and will likely be told that their last day of work is sometime this week, possibly even the day they are given the news,” stated the Guild’s note. “Regardless
