National Basketball Association superstar Steph Curry became the first athlete to start a birthday fundraiser on his own page.

The Golden State Warriors point guard is raising money to help support Nothing but Nets, a global grassroots campaign to raise awareness, funds and voices to fight malaria.

Curry set out to raise $30,000 for the organization in honor of his 30th birthday, and at the time of this post, that total was rapidly approaching $40,000.

Facebook announced last November that it would waive its fees for all nonprofit fundraisers.

Curry wrote in his pitch, “This year is a big one … I just turned 30, the big three-oh. The past few days have been filled with a lot of fun and love from people close to me. People have been asking me what they can give me as a gift. Truthfully, I’d rather give than get. That’s why I’m creating this fundraiser to raise $30K on my 30th birthday for Nothing but Nets. For those that know me well, this is a cause I’ve supported and been passionate about for the past nine years. Whether you donate $5 or $500, every little bit helps. Thanks for all the love and support. I’ve included information about Nothing But Nets below.”
