Even though Patrick Hipes is still listed as assistant managing editor of the Hollywood Reporter on the publication’s latest, updated masthead (March 9th), that’s not quite right.
He is in fact – as of March 1st – the new managing editor of Nikki Finke’s five-year-old Deadline.com, following Michael Speier’s brief stint in that position last year. Hipes was only just promoted at THR last October, but perhaps sees the writing on the revamped trade’s wall. He had been with the company since 2004, first as a copy editor and then as copy chief.
Hipes will work out of the Mail.com Media Corp. (MMC) offices in Windsor Hills on La Cienega Blvd., near the airport, and be reunited with his former THR mate Nellie Andreeva. She actually let the cat-hire out of the bag last Sunday, when she mentioned Hipes by name and new position in this Charlie Sheen post.
Before stepping into the Hollywood trade news world, Hipes worked at the Orange County Register, the Los Angeles Daily News, and The Oregonian. The new man in Finke’s fiesty world is a Portland, OR native, and graduated in 1994 from Northfield College in Minnesota with a BA in political science. Speier meanwhile moved over first to sister publication TVLine.com, and is now at yet another MMC property, Movieline.com.
