Next iPhone Tipped to Have a 3.9499999" Display

Rumors about the new iPhone are heating up today with a new report from 9to5Mac. According to their internal Apple sources, the new iPhone won't have a 4" screen. Instead it's going to have a 3.95" screen with an entirely new aspect ratio. The new screen is going to be much taller than the existing screen on the iPhone. 9to5Mac is predicting that the resolution will be 1136 x 640, or about 15% taller. They're also reporting that the new iPhone is close to the dimensions of the current one. The larger screen is accommodated by shrinking the bezel above and below screen. Right now we know of a few next-generation iPhone candidates in testing. These prototype phones are floating around Apple HQ in thick, locked shells in order to disguise the exterior design to “undisclosed” employees. We know of two next-generation iPhones in testing with a larger display: the iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2. These phones are in the PreEVT stage of development and are codenamed N41AP (5,1) and N42AP (5,2). Because Apple reserves certain models for internal-only usage (such as the N96 phone we previously reported on), we’re not sure which of the two devices will make its way into the world later this year. All in all this is a quite plausible rumor. One problem with a larger screen or a different resolution screen is that apps would need to be updated to support it. But I don't think that will be an issue here. The new iPhone could continue to support older apps without any need to update them by letting the app use 960x640 space the app is expecting. Apple could be planning to reserve the rest of the screen real estate for a taskbar or some other useful function. And updated apps might even be allowed to reclaim the full screen. 9to5Mac
