Per a fun piece in the Dayton Daily News, making inroads in this department is Oakwood, Ohio resident Mary Lou Guizzo. She’s been creating crossword puzzles for the past few years, some on her own and others with the help of a Seattle-based collaborator:

“I’m a big fan of Mary Lou, who has had five crosswords published in the New York Times so far, with more on the way,” said [editor Will] Shortz.
