Romanian Rocker Now Fronting One-Man Newspaper Show
In the early 1980s, Grigore Culian played bass guitar for Romanian pop group The Romantics. In the waning days of print media, at age 61, he runs from a Queens basement the Romanian bi-weekly newspaper New York Magazin.
Per freelance writer Louie Lazar’s piece in the Wall Street Journal, the publication was founded in 1997, has a circulation of 2,000 and rides on the blood, sweat and tears of the 61-year-old ex-rocker. Through it all, the publisher has also weathered two personal bankruptcy filings:
“We don’t have this type of newspaper in Romania,” said Aurel Sasu, literary critic and journalism professor at the University of Cluj in Romania… And with many Romanian-American newspapers having closed in the past two decades, New York Magazin is “the most important newspaper in the community,” he said.
