New Social Network Launches For Digital Content

Last month Apple launched Ping, a social network tied to iTunes, and now there is a new social network for consuming digital media including eBooks called Appitalism.com.

The social site lets members explore digital content including eBooks, games, apps, songs and videos. Members can socialize around the content and discuss the content and rate and review it. The social network is free, and members who write reviews can earn titles and badges, which can be redeemed for items in the content catalog.

Members can use the site to purchase eBooks and have a choice of eleven different operating devices to read the eBooks on from Apple iOS to Twitter Apps.

At first look, Appitalism’s eBook catalog seems a bit random. The first book listed is White Fang from Jack London, which is priced at $2.99 on Appitalism, despite the fact that the book is in the public domain and free on other sites. The same goes for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which is $.99 on Appitalism, and free elsewhere. Still there are a number of game apps and children’s titles that could have potential, but the catalog will have to grow for readers to want to get involved and actively participate.
