New Media Index: Debate Over Mosque Near Ground Zero Tops Bloggers' Shared News Links

After barely coming in second during the week of Aug. 9-13, the debate over the proposed mosque and cultural center two blocks from Ground Zero was the topic of the most shared news links by bloggers during the week of Aug. 16-20, while The Web Is Dead, the cover story of Wired, topped the list of most-Tweeted news links, and the most-watched news and politics video on YouTube was a campaign ad for Brazilian presidential candidate José Serra, according to the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s New Media Index.

The debate over the Lower Manhattan mosque accounted for 14 percent of news links shared via the blogosphere, and it was followed by: a poll by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, which found that 18 percent of respondents believed that President Barack Obama was Muslim, up from 11 percent in March 2009, at 13...
