New iPad to Have a 16:9 Screen?

You’re not going to see this iPad either.

If you can tear your attention away from the Nook HD news today, then I have a new iPad rumor for you. is reporting that Apple’s next iPad, the one which is expected to be unveiled next spring, could have a new screen geometry.

There are many sites that have speculated that Apple should eventually prepare a widescreen iPad. The iPhone 5 screen recently went widescreen and now Los Angeles industry analyst Paul Mueller claims that Apple could be preparing a widescreen iPad.

“I have talked to at least three people close to Apple who say that there are new iPad prototypes that have a 16:9 aspect ratio. They aren’t talking about the upcoming iPad mini either,” Mueller says. He will have more information in the next couple of weeks.

This rumor doesn’t seem very likely. As you probably know the current iPad has a 9.7″ screen with a length to width ratio of 4:3. This new rumored iPad screen would be both taller and narrower than on the current device, and I don’t see that happening.

While a widescreen iPad would be good for certain activities like watching some movies, in some ways it is also less useful than the current iPad. For example, web browsing works better on the iPad’s 4:3 screen because it is a nice compromise between having a wide enough view when holding the iPad either vertically or horizontally. A widescreen iPad would give you a wider view when browsing with the iPad held horizontally at the cost of a less convenient and narrower view while browsing with the iPad held vertically.

Apple could have chosen to make a widescreen iPad and they didn’t. I’m willing to bet that they looked at the alternative and decided against it.
